large abstract sculpture
Brian Willsher (1920 - 2010)
1980s
Bandsawn wood
57 x 49 cm

An oversized bandsawn abstract wood sculpture attributed to British artist Brian Willsher. Executed in Willsher's recognisable style of undulating forms and intricate carved lines, that the artist described as "doodling in wood".

Whilst much larger than sculptures associated with Willsher, it is not made of the same quality of materials and so suggests it may have been created in the latter part of his career. Sadly he suffered financially following a controversial moment in the art world, where British tax and revenue services felt able to classify  Willsher's work as "not art". Even after much outcry and support, including from the legendary artist Henry Moore, Willsher became withdrawn from the art business. His later pieces were made from cheaper wood rather than the mahogany and teak in his best known works.
