still life after sebastian stoskopff
German school
17th century
Oil on canvas
42 x 63 cm

An interesting copy of 'Still Life with Philipp Melanchthon's Portrait by Cranach', after the 1645 oil painting by German artist Sebastian Stoskopff, quite possibly painted at the same time by an apprentice in Stoskopff's studio.

The painting is a vanitas, a type of still-life that conveys a moral message, often through the inclusion of objects that symbolize the transience of life.
Philip Melanchthon (born Philipp Schwartzerdt;[b] 16 February 1497 – 19 April 1560) was a German Lutheran reformer, collaborator with Martin Luther, the first systematic theologian of the Protestant Reformation, an intellectual leader of the Lutheran Reformation, and influential designer of educational systems.
