classical aubusson tapestry
France
Circa 1680
Wool and silk
Approx 280 x 209 cm
A magnificent fragment of a 17th century Aubusson tapestry depicting a classical/historical scene.
Whilst the identity of the figures is not precisely known, there is strong evidence this depicts Alexander the Great with his general Hephaiston before the tent of the Persian King Darius III.
From 1660 there was a popular movement in France of work depicting Alexander the Great, following a number of artwork commissions (oil on canvas and tapestries) by Charles le Brun for Louis XIV.
