Portrait of a young girl
British school
18th century
Oil on canvas
57 x 49 cm

A bust length portrait of an unknown young girl, likely a child of a prominent family from looking at her jewellery and fine clothes, specifically the yellow dress. The flowers in her hair were a common symbol in this era of a subject's purity in and this is further emphasised by the wearing pearls, again a symbol of purity but also beauty. The sitter's complexion is fair and even, but with rosy and flushed cheeks, representing youth and good health.
