Set of buddhist monk statues
Mandalay style
Mid-20th Century
Hand painted carved wood
W 49 x H 122 cm
A set of 5 hand carved and painted Burmese disciple-monk sculptures, originating from the historic Mandalay region of Myanmar.
These statues capture the serene expression and flowing robes of typical Burmese monk representations, with each one holding an alms bowl, an essential element in Buddhist practice, symbolising humility and the giving nature of monastic life. Each sculpture stands barefoot on a base with stylised lotus petals, but with varying heights overall representing the seniority of each figure, with the tallest featuring a traditional top knot hairstyle.
These statues are not just decorative, they are reminders of the spiritual journey emphasised in Buddhism.
